Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

Testimony and brief history of our pastor

“Behold, I have given before you an open door, and no one can shut it.”

(Revelation 3:8)

This is the verse that the Holy Spirit has especially quickened to my mind and heart again and again during the course of my ministry as a full time pastor - especially during difficult times. I have learnt from experience that nobody in the entire universe can close the door of ministerial opportunity – not because Christ’s ministers are special people, but because our Lord is so faithful!

I was born in Johannesburg, and grew up in a Christian home in Pretoria, South Africa. I remained a nominal Christian for many years. After an intense spiritual struggle that lasted for more than a year, I gained a glorious assurance of salvation at the age of sixteen.

I have been married to my wife, Susanna, for forty years. We have no children of our own, but we have had three children in foster care for a period of time – one boy and two girls. All three are faithful confessing Christians, and live and work in Cape Town, South Africa. The son, as well as his younger sister, have been happily married for several years, while the elder sister is still unmarried. Two years ago, the son and his wife became the parents of a beautiful girl.

I obtained an academic degree from the University of Pretoria (B.A.), and, at the end of the subsequent year, a teacher´s diploma from the Pretoria Teacher´s Training College. Thereafter, I taught English in a High School in Pretoria for seven years. During the last three of these years, I served as Acting Head of the Department of English. During this time, I also obtained an honours degree in Education (B.Ed.) from the University of South Africa. During the second half of my teaching career, I increasingly sensed God´s call to labour full-time for Him in His Vineyard. Eventually, this call became so strong, that I bade my teaching career farewell. For several years, I prepared myself for full-time Christian ministry. I eventually obtained the Licentiate in Theology (L. Th.) from the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kempton Park. During my time as pastor and church planter, I also obtained a Masters in Theology (M.Th) from the Rand Afrikaans University, and, subsequent to that, a Doctorate in Biblical Studies (D. Litt et Phil)from the Rand Afrikaans University.

I served the Lord as full-time pastor and church planter in my home country for about thirty years. First, in an already existing church in Bethal. Subsequently, I planted a new church in Secunda, in which I served as pastor for sixteen years. During this time, I wrote three books in my mother tongue, Afrikaans: one on the nature of the true churches of Christ; another, on the nature of true salvation; and a third, on God´s plan for marriage. Subsequently, I laboured as church planter in both Blouberg and Kuils River in Cape Town. I served as pastor of both these churches. During this time, I also gave some lectures in New Testament Studies at Cornerstone Christian College in Cape Town. Subsequently, I pastored an existing Baptist church in Kempton Park, after which I planted a new church in Pretoria, which I also pastored for a few years. During my time in Pretoria, I also lectured the subject New Testament Exegesis, as well as other theological subjects, for six years at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kempton Park. I accepted a call to the Free Baptist Church in Heilbronn, Germany, in 2008, where I am still serving as full-time pastor. During this period, I also gave some lectures in New Testament Exegesis and New Testament Theology at the Academy for Reformed Theology in Hannover. During this period, I, together with various other biblical scholars, worked for the Bible Society of South Africa – serving as one of the exegetes of the two New Testament letters, 2 John and 3 John. The purpose of the entire team has already been achieved, namely, the translation and publication of a new translation of the Bible in Afrikaans.
